Description

Explore the fascinating world of Fanniidae with 'Fauna of New Zealand 71: Fanniidae' by M Cecilia Dominguez. This comprehensive guide dives into the unique characteristics and ecological significance of this small family of flies that play critical roles in both medical and forensic fields. With dimensions of 180 x 242 mm and a total of 91 pages, this paperback publication, released on July 29, 2014, offers an in-depth look into the diverse species of Fanniids. While many Fanniidae are primarily found in the Holarctic region, recent discoveries have unveiled new species in the Neotropical area. Fanniids thrive in forested environments, highlighting their rarity in open landscapes. This book elaborates on the distinct behaviors of these flies, as males frequently swarm in shaded habitats while females are drawn to decaying organic material and excrement. The identification of Fanniidae is simplified due to their unique subcostal vein shape, a characteristic that sets them apart from other calyptrate flies present in New Zealand. Perfect for entomologists, researchers, and nature enthusiasts alike, this guide is an essential addition to your wildlife library. Fanniids are a small family of flies that are known mainly because many of the species are associated with humans and are of medical and forensic importance. Most of the species of Fanniidae have been described from the Holarctic region, but recently many new species have been described from the Neotropical region. The Fanniidae are inhabitants of forested areas, and are relatively rare in open landscapes. Males of almost all species form swarms in shaded areas and females may be attracted to decaying organic matter and excrement. Fanniidae can be most readily distinguished from other calyptrate flies found in New Zealand by the shape of the subcostal vein, which runs straight in its apical half, without any sinuous bend.
